While the so-called mom jean may have a bad reputation for being quite unflattering, mom style should not automatically be considered the same. In fact, mom style can be incredibly stylish when done right.
I know firsthand that mothers have so much going on, juggling multiple tasks throughout our packed schedules every. single. day. As a mom, having to spend so much time thinking about what to wear and putting outfits together are just about the very last things I want to do. In fact, they’re usually one of the very last things I even have time to do.
Motherhood is a fulltime job. Dressing ourselves shouldn’t have to be. The clothes we wear should actually support our lifestyle, making our days easier and more comfortable, rather than inhibiting or complicating them. However, in addition to this, what we wear should still be a way for us to express ourselves, even if we may have far more important things to think about these days. With that in mind, I’ve put together some styling tips so that mom style can be both functional and fashionable for everyone.
Multi-functional Pieces
Multi-functional and comfortable tops and bottoms are the best friends of moms who just don’t have a lot of extra time – meaning all of us. Choose tops that can take you from a parent teacher meeting during the week to a casual afternoon during the weekend. Dresses, skirts and trousers should also be able to take you from day to night. A great neutral colored blazer, black and white trousers, a simple tank top, a timeless button down dress shirt, classic blue jeans and shift dresses are literal must-haves. They’re not only easy and comfortable to wear but they can go with almost anything, depending on what the occasion calls for.
For instance, wear a black shift dress with flat ankle boots as you go about your busy day, switch to heels for dinner out or pair it with cool sneakers for a weekend stroll. If your day calls for trousers, pair it with a simple tank top or a scoop tee and throw a blazer over it for a more dressed up look. You can wear the same top combination and pair it with jeans instead if you want to look put together but slightly more casual. You can, of course, also wear your blue jeans with a sweatshirt during the day then replace the hoodie with a lace top and slip into heels for a night out. Multi-functional pieces give you endless outfit options that are fast and easy to put together.
Elevated Basics
The best way to look stylish with minimal effort and zero time wasted is by going for elevated basics. What do I mean by elevated basics? Well, comfortable basics that can go with almost anything, that you can wear practically anywhere and everywhere and best of all, that have a little stylish twist for that elevated every day look. Another added bonus is that you’ll look fashionable with minimal to no accessories required. New moms won’t have to fear your little one pulling on your earrings or any other jewelry you have on you.
Instead of throwing on the first white sweater you find in your closet, choose one with a little style detail, like a cutout along the neck area. You can also forget about your boring old turtle neck and upgrade it with a pleated version or one with applique details. Whether you pair either type of top with jeans, trousers, a skirt or even shorts, you’ll look stylish in no time.

We’re constantly moving around, multi-tasking and going from one place to another, fixing one thing and then the next. Being a mom is certainly the most rewarding job. While we give so much of ourselves to the little people we love, it doesn’t mean that we have to give up our personal sense of style.
